January Team Building Ideas for 2026: Fresh Starts, Outdoor Adventures & Alternative Challenges
Urban Off Switch – Nature-Based & Adventure-Led Corporate Team Building Across the UK
January is the perfect moment for a team reset. The rush of December has eased, teams are refreshed, and companies are looking for meaningful ways to reconnect, focus and start the year with intention.
At Urban Off Switch, we specialise in winter-friendly team building ideas that feel relaxed, energising and completely different from the standard corporate days out. Whether you want something outdoors, something creative, or something fun and competitive indoors, here are our top January team building ideas to kickstart 2026.
1. Photography Walk (With Cameras Provided)

A calm, reflective team activity that works brilliantly in the British winter.
Your team will join our photographer for a short “how to use your camera” mini-session (we provide all cameras), before heading out on a leisurely countryside photography walk.
The aim isn’t perfection — it’s slowing down, noticing, chatting and capturing winter landscapes in a completely new way.
At the end of the session, we gather indoors, put everyone’s best photos on the big screen, and enjoy a warm drink while the team relaxes.
Perfect for: mindfulness, creativity, fresh-year mindset
Always a great activity for your team. Surprises people how interactive a photography session can be and showcases creativity and artistry. Can work in a variety of locations whether its locations like Windsor Park or the Rolling Hills of Exmoor.
2. Our Alternative Triathlons (Indoor, Fun, Suited to all!)

One of your signature experiences — and perfect for groups avoiding the cold.
Your team splits into groups of three for a triathlon that’s nothing like the traditional kind:
1️⃣ Indoor rowing race — team member 1 rows on a machine linked to a live screen, racing other groups.
2️⃣ VR problem-solving challenge — team member 2 takes over with a creative puzzle-based VR experience.
3️⃣ Turbo trainer bike ride — team member 3 rides hard to bring the team home.
Want an epic finish? Choose a final team VR challenge such as an escape room or collaborative mission.
It’s competitive, hilarious and gives everyone a chance to shine — no fitness level required.
Perfect for: mixed-ability groups, retreats, indoor winter events
We love our alternative triathlons as it helps to bring out everyone’s skills. Stay in the dry with a Row, VR, Bike split. Helps to showcase skills in problem solving, fitness and team work. Always a great laugh!
We use top turbo trainers from Saris (and provide bikes) and concept 2 rowing machines.
3. Hike & Bike Winter Adventure

Yes — the British winter is wet, windy and wild… but that’s half the fun.
Start with a gentle coastal or countryside walk, embracing the fresh air and dramatic winter scenery. From there, hop on our hire bikes or e-bikes and cruise along quiet paths to a carefully chosen country pub.
Warm up by the fire, grab a coffee or lunch, and enjoy a cosy finish to a refreshing winter adventure.
Perfect for: teams who want outdoors + comfort
If you’re looking for a fresh and active day (or hour!) then why not split things up with a bit of a hike then bike. Helps to stop boredom with one activity and adds a new element that many team members wouldn’t have experienced before. These are super popular in locations with easy trails such is North devon (Tarka Trail) and the New Forest, specially in the winter when not e everyone wants bumpy muddy trails.
4. Winter Treasure Hunt (With Go-Karts, Bikes & Buggies)
A brilliant option if your group doesn’t want a long hike but still wants something energetic and teamwork-focused.
Hosted directly at your retreat, estate or venue, teams scour the grounds searching for clues, completing mini-challenges and racing between checkpoints.
To make it even more fun, we can mix in:
-
Go karts
-
Bicycles
-
Golf buggies
-
Scooters
Fast-paced, competitive, hilarious — and a great way to break up a winter retreat day.
Perfect for: estates, hotels, indoors/outdoors split days
We can run these at estates which gives a great platform for open space and flexibility without having to get any added permissions. Locations such as the De Vere Beaumont Estate in Windsor work well for this or Huntsham Court in Devon.
5. Winter Walk & Reflection Session
For teams that want a slower, more thoughtful start to the year.
A guided walk along woodland trails or coastal paths gives people space to talk naturally, away from desks and meeting rooms. Add simple team prompts, reflection moments or goal-setting questions to spark meaningful conversations.
Perfect for: wellbeing, reconnection, leadership teams
Sometimes something slow can bring out the best in people. Wanders across areas like the south west coastal path help people take in the great outdoors and spend some good old fashioned bonding time together. Simple, but effective!
6. Fire & Food Gathering (The Cosy Winter Option)

A warm, atmospheric option that brings people together without needing high activity levels.
Picture this: fire pits, blankets, lanterns, mulled drinks, acoustic music, and relaxed conversation. Add optional hot food from local suppliers and you have a winter-friendly team evening that feels personal and memorable.
Perfect for: relaxed groups, post-meeting social, end-of-day wind-down
We have our own custom made fire pit that we bring to your venue along with seating to create a dramatic setting for stories and conversations.
7. Navigation Challenge or Micro-Adventure
If your team enjoys problem solving, this combines thinking + movement perfectly. Teams compete using maps, clues or simple GPS checkpoints.
Works well in estate grounds, coast paths, forest trails or even urban areas.
Perfect for: competitive teams, large group winter days
Using technology we a create a challenge that involves VR, creative way markers and Geocache style pin points.
